Bible Passage: Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”

Reflection.

In these verses, Jesus identified His followers as light of the world. Like a town built on a hill this light cannot be hidden. No one puts a lamp under a bowl because a lamp is designed to help people see in dark places. Here we learn that we are called to be the light in the world. Just as God takes away our sins and puts His righteousness onto us, He takes away our darkness and puts His light into us. When we are saved, He lights the lamps of our hearts. We should then let our light shine before others so that people may see in our life the light of Jesus, in our good works, showing love and care in the way we speak and we act.

Let us therefore pray that:

  1. We would walk closely with Jesus, be consecrated in His truth so that His light would shine through us and guide those people in dark places.

  2. We would live/work humbly, but boldly, for God’s glory so that others might see this life/work and give glory to God as we do.

God would grant us opportunities to be witnesses of His Good News to others and that His glory would be proclaimed to the whole world.

Discussion Starters.

1.     Are you still hiding the light that Jesus has given you or living as a town on the hill where all can see the light of Jesus in you?

2.      Do your good works cause people to give glory to God or to yourself?

3.      List out people that you think God has called you to be a light to. Discuss specific ways you can be a light to them.
