Bible Passage: John 14:6
Reflections:
Jesus is the way
When Jesus says “I am the way” He responds directly to human confusion and uncertainty. Jesus is the way to the Father;
through what He teaches, for by keeping to his teaching we will reach heaven
through faith, which he inspires, because he came to this world so “that whoever believes in him may have eternal life” (Jn 3:1 5)
through His example, since no one can go to the Father without imitating the Son
through His merits, which make it possible for us to enter our heavenly home
Above all, He is the way because he reveals the Father to us through his divine nature. He declares to all men that He is the only path linking heaven and earth.
St Thomas Aquinas explains that Christ is the way according to His humanity, because through His human life, suffering, and obedience, we can approach God. St Augustine further teaches that by “walking through man,” that is, through Christ’s humanity, we share in God’s divine plan. Even when our progress feels slow or imperfect, remaining on His path draws us steadily closer to our true destination.
Jesus is the truth
Jesus declares Himself “the truth”, revealing that truth is not merely a set of ideas or moral principles, but a person. As the Son of God made flesh, Jesus reveals who God is and demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His promises. St John affirms that the Word became flesh, “full of grace and truth” (Jn 1:14), showing that divine truth is now accessible in human form. Jesus teaches that true worship must be “in spirit and truth” (Jn 4:23), emphasizing that authentic faith flows from a genuine relationship with God rather than external observance alone. St Augustine explains that “Christ is Truth because He makes known both God and the way to God”.
Jesus is the life
Jesus also proclaims Himself “the life”, affirming that all true and lasting life comes from Him. From all eternity, the Son shares divine life with the Father - “in Him was life” (Jn 1:4) - and through grace, He invites humanity to share in that same divine life. Eternal life, as Jesus defines it, is not merely endless existence, but intimate communion with God: “that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (Jn 17:3). According to St Thomas Aquinas, the end of the human journey is the satisfaction of our deepest desires: knowledge of truth and fullness of life, both of which are fulfilled in Christ. Jesus confirms this promise when He says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10). In Him, life is not only restored but elevated, offering hope that extends beyond suffering, death, and human limitation.
Discussion Questions:
1. When Jesus says He is the way, how does this shape the way couples or families make decisions together - especially in seasons of stress, parenting challenges, or uncertainty?
2. What does it mean to live by Jesus as the truth in a world shaped by opinions, expectations, and constant comparison?
3. What are your struggles when trying to follow the life of Jesus?
