LIA NSW Sleep-Out for the Homeless

Updated: Jun 12

One Night. A Lifetime of Perspective

By Rey & Tootsie Domingo for LIA NSW

We began with an honest conversation — How do we truly see homelessness?

Each of us shared different thoughts. Some were unsure, others deeply moved. But one thing united us: a desire to understand, to step outside our comfort zones, and to grow in love.

There was hesitation. Could we really do this? The cold of winter, the risk of discomfort, the uncertainty of sleep — it was all so real. Many in our LIA core group are seniors, some living with health conditions, and yet... there was courage. There was faith. There was a purpose.

Even those who couldn't physically join were with us in spirit.

Bro Benny lovingly prepared a safe space in his backyard, laying cardboard on the ground with care. Sis Ching brought warmth to our bodies and hearts with her Molo soup and bread for supper. Sis Tess woke early to serve us chicken congee and boiled eggs — a gesture that reminded us how love shows up in the little things.

We began the night with prayer, uniting our hearts in the Rosary. Then we lay down on cold, hard floors, wrapped in layers of clothing, holding on to faith and each other. It was dark. The air was sharp. We could hear the gentle rustle of leaves, the quiet shuffle of sleeping bags, the occasional snore… and, from the trees above, the eerie, high-pitched chirping of bats — a sound that reminded us we were truly out of our comfort zone.

We didn’t expect to sleep.

But somehow… we did.

And when morning came, we opened our eyes with the same amazement:

"We made it through the night."

In that moment, we realized: we weren’t alone. God had been with us. He stilled the wind, softened the cold, and wrapped us in a quiet peace. It was His grace — gentle, strong, and present.

But this experience wasn’t just about braving the cold. It was about opening our eyes — and our hearts.

It was a night of awakening:

* Awakening to the harsh reality many face every day.

* Awakening to our capacity for compassion.

* Awakening to the call to act.

We walked away changed — not just informed but inspired. Now that we’ve seen a glimpse of the struggle, we’re more determined than ever to help. We want to give more, love deeper, and serve with an even greater purpose.

To everyone who stood with us — through prayers, encouragement, and support — thank you. You were part of this journey, too.

And now, we invite you to go a step further.

Be part of this mission.

Help us bring warmth, shelter, and hope to those who need it most.

Give generously.

Give love.

Give today.

Together, let’s make compassion louder than comfort. Let’s turn empathy into action.
